My Birthday

Posted on 22. Jul, 2010 by derek in Blog

My beautiful wife threw an amazing surprise birthday for me July 19 Monday night, a day before my birthday. I had a great time and was treated to love and laughter from my friends and I couldn’t have had a better time. We are living in hard times these days, specifically in South Louisiana but my party was an elegant diversion that lifted my spirits.

I will be in Providence, RI this weekend with Maurice Brown. See ya!!

The Oil

Posted on 15. Jul, 2010 by derek in Blog

I’m not much of a blogger but I am elated to write that the oil has finally stopped gushing into the Gulf Of Mexico! This nightmare has only just begun. The cleanup will take who knows how long and the Moratorium on deep water drilling is causing an ideological split among South Louisiana residents.

On a lighter note, my summer (musically speaking) is going well. While i didn’t do the European tour with Maurice Brown, I’ve managed to keep busy working in New Orleans. And I finally have seen all the episodes of the HBO series “Treme”. I thought it would be cheesy but I gotta say, it’s pretty spot on when it comes to our culture, language and music!

Jazz Fest 2010

Posted on 19. Apr, 2010 by derek in Blog

I just returned from New Delhi, India on Friday April 16 and attended my man Eric Lucero’s wedding the same day. The wedding was beautiful and the trip to India was amazing. The Indian students that are part of the Carnegie Hall Exchange program were great to be around and they show so much promise.

I am so excited about this year’s Jazz Fest! I’m playing with so many great bands so come check me out and say hello…

My year so far has included playing saxophone on a few Wyclef Jean songs, playing Lincoln Center with Marcus Roberts and my band, a great jazzfest, and great tours with Maurice Brown, Ellis Marsalis and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. I am looking forward to playing with NOJO this weekend in California and at Essence Fest in New Orleans. Honestly, I can’t wait to go home and see all my peoples in New Orleans; i am so homesick but living in Brooklyn has been great. I am working on my next CD so please stay tuned because its gonna be hot. Till next time….
